The Black Hole Mass and Extreme Orbital Structure in Ngc 1399

چکیده
The largest galaxies, and in particular central galaxies in clusters, offer unique insight into understanding the mechanism for the growth of nuclear black holes. We present Hubble Space Telescope kinematics for NGC 1399, the central galaxy in Fornax. We find the best-fit model contains a black hole of (5.1±0.7)×108 M⊙ (at a distance of 21.1 Mpc), a factor of over 2 below the correlation of black hole mass and velocity dispersion. We also find a dramatic signature for central tangential anisotropy. The velocity profiles on adjacent sides 0.5 away from the nucleus show strong bimodality, and the central spectrum shows a large drop in the dispersion. Both of these observations point to an orbital distribution that is tangentially biased. The best-fit orbital model suggests a ratio of the tangential to radial internal velocity dispersions of three. This ratio is the largest seen in any galaxy to date and will provide an important measure for the mode by which the central black hole has grown. A Comparison of Ultraluminous X - Ray Sources in Ngc 1399 and the Antennae Galaxies ( Ngc 4038 / 4039 )
The temporal and spectral properties of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs, L X > 2 × 10 39 ergs s −1) and bright X-ray sources (L X > 3 × 10 38 ergs s −1) are examined and compared in two extremely different host environments: the old elliptical galaxy NGC 1399 and the young, starforming Antennae galaxies (NGC 4038/4039). ULXs in NGC 1399 show little variability on either long or short time sca...

We report [O III] λ5007 Å and [N II] λ6583 Å emission from a globular cluster harboring the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) CXOJ033831.8-352604 in the Fornax elliptical galaxy NGC 1399. No accompanying Balmer emission lines are present in the spectrum. One possibility is that the forbidden lines emanate from X-ray illuminated debris of a star that has been tidally-disrupted by an intermediate-...

Accurate and radially extended stellar kinematic data reaching R = 97 from the center are presented for the cD galaxy of Fornax, NGC 1399. The stellar rotation is small (≤ 30 km/s); the stellar velocity dispersion remains constant at 250-270 km/s. The deviations from Gaussian line of sight velocity distributions are small, at the percent level. We construct dynamical models of the galaxy, depro...
متن کاملDynamics of the Boxy Elliptical Galaxy NGC 1600
We use three–integral models to infer the distribution function (df) of the boxy E3-E4 galaxy NGC 1600 from surface brightness and line profile data on the minor and major axes. We assume axisymmetry and that the mass-to-light ratio is constant in the central ∼ 1Re. Stars in the resulting gravitational potential move mainly on regular orbits. We use an approximate third integral K from perturba...
